Dandelions and Bullet Holes, We Stand in our Civilian Clothes

I was watching "Set it Off" on tv this weekend. Great movie.
It got cut into paper mache by TNT but it was still of interest for me...

There is a very sensual sex scene, completely cut out.
Somehow watching Queen Latifah getting riddled with bullets, her body slowly rolling to the ground, her face pained and scared, is okay.
TNT, along with the FCC determined that the viewing community is more comfortable watching a human being die, quite painfully, then watching a scene with sexual content.

The military can come to the high school, bring in a massive flight simulator, that you can't play unless you give the recruiter your information so they can hound you endlessly, yet I can't teach about birth control or condoms.

I'm starting to have a better understanding of the phrase "make love not war" and why it was so adamantly requested.
Because it wasn't what was going on.

Short posts lately.
Nick took all my words in a lively and lovely debate.
I will expound tomorrow.

Also, this is my 200th post.

g'night and g'luck.

It wasn't my fault. I'm addicted to arguing. I don't even remember what we were talking about now. I know it was about some lady and she did this thing and something happened.

Hmm.. that doesn't sound right at all.

It was fun though.

A couple of years ago, I had to take Mr. Jaded to the hospital because he'd hurt his back badly...conveniently as we were packing to move, so I had to do it all myself. I digress...

Anyway, we waited a LONG ass time in the ER, because as we were waiting, a car drove up, two thugs covered in blood got out, and they forced their way into the ER screaming. They were taken right away because they had gun shot wounds. The cops came...tons of 'em... more gang members came. Ok, I'm assuming they were gang members because they were all dressed alike from head to toe, and cuz there were multiple weapons found in the car. That, and my bro in law is on that particular police force, and they were afraid of a gang retaliation going down.

The thing that struck me the most is that the two guys who were shot were yelling in pain, and were completely shocked that a bullet wound hurt that much. They kept saying "it hurts, it hurts... why does it hurt so fucking much?" Um, because you were just shot?!

I don't think that video games and tv cause violence necessarily, but I do think that they desensitize kids to the reality of it. The two guys I saw that day were barely out of their teens, and they could not believe that being shot hurts. Even if you know intellectually that you're playing a game or watching a movie, I still think that somewhere in the back of your mind the reality gets blurred. Getting shot hurts. And that's only if you're lucky enough to live through it.

I think we need to stop desensitizing kids to violence, and start sensitizing them to the realities of sexual activity. As I've said before, I think we should teach them abstinence as the only fool proof method of preventing pregnancy and STDs, but teach that along with the right info about safe sex, AIDS, STDs, pregnancy etc. You'd think that schools were showing them porn by the way some parents act about sex ed. Kids need all the facts just the way adults do. They don't need some watered down, sexually repressed version. Just my opinion.

The last thing I want is kids running around at a young age thinking sex is trivial, and abstinence definetly has a part in sex education. Teenagers should know that they get to make a conscious decision about when they are ready to have sex and no amount of pressure should change that.

To make that the only course of education is downright criminal. I would much rather my daughter understand her body and see that sex is a natural and enjoyable whereas violence is something that SHOULD shock her and make her uncomfortable.

Not the otherway around.

The military coming with a simulator game to get teenagers excited at the thought of flying overseas to kill people neglects the fact that they will be risking their lives, again trivializing violence, only this time with very real consequences.

I think beyond the matter of violence and 'sexual content' on TV (which is such a STUPID dichotomy, if you ask me, it's always about sex and violence...God we are Freud's children), I am DEEPLY disturbed about an armed forces recruiter coming in to a school and waving YET ANOTHER VIDEO GAME in the face of youth in order to get more conscripts.

Has this government no shame? It's time for a revolution.

Yea me too Fritz.

Miss HT Psych- doesn't the idea of a military establishment coming into a school and using "game simulations" to get kids in the army have an reverse ender's game creepy vibe?

oh i know he attempted to ruffle my feathers, and I enjoyed it.
Sometimes I miss the lively debates I would have in University.

Didn't stop me from calling him a jackass a few times last night. Interesting that he relished in it later with you...

I know some topics to make Nick shut his pie hole.

I might just tell you them if he's not nice.
