As the growing number of wedding related responsibilities start to pile up I am thinking of going for an "iPod wedding", which basically means I don't want to bother with a DJ.
So I have to ask, are there any songs you wonderful people in blogger land think are essential to a wedding? Any that you would rather die then have to dance to one more time?

No. Electric. Slide. Ever.
Ooh, the Ipod wedding idea sounds AWESOME. I wish I would've done that at my wedding.
I agree with jaded. No Electric Slide or Macarena. Songs you have to have, huh? I love anything old from Michael Jackson and I love "Love Shack" from the B52's.
That comment above is from naynayfazz, by the way. Stupid blogger!
These songs don't necessarily have a wedding/romance theme, but are nonetheless essential for post-matrimonial ass shaking:
"Groove is in the Heart" Deelite
"Scenerio" A Tribe Called Quest and Leaders of the New School
"Jump Around" House of Pain
"Nothin' But a G Thang" Dr. Dre and Snoop
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" Nirvana
"The Humpty Dance" Digital Underground
"Pussy Control" Prince (make sure the old folks are already gone)
"The Thong Song" by Sisqo
"Back That Azz Up" by Juvenile
"Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot
These were all played at my wedding reception.
Also, members of the wedding party all had theme songs for walking down the aisle, like in professional wrestling.
And I'm totally with Todd on "Pussy Control."
"she's a lady" by Tom Jones
"Blister in the sun" by Violent Femmes
and Tainted Love by Soft Cell
What do you think? The "playlist" or the "do not playlist"?
The chicken dance one is a big NO!
Harvester of Sorrow - Metallica
It's Business Time - Flight of the Conchords
John Wayne Gacy, jr. - Sufjan Stevens

Better Together/Banana Pancakes/Do You Remember (medley stlye)- Jack Johnson
Come Around - Rhett Miller
Love and Happiness - Al Green
This Is The Day - The The
Don't: Celebration
YMCA
electric slide

OPP
Paradise by the Dashboard Lights
Havin' My Baby
Jimmy Buffet anything
Do: Groove is in the Heart, per Todd
Let's Stay Together
Get Up Offa That Thing
At Last (Etta James)
Agree with many other comments. Two classics that I love: At Last, and Unforgettable. For irony: Love Hurts. For supreme Irony: Put another log on the fire by Mac Davis. One of the funniest songs ever.
And your idea is better than a band! :-)
We gave our dj a list of songs and told her that, if she played them, she wouldn't get paid. On the list were any song that could possibly lead to a line dance or conga line, "In the Mood" because there are a billion other great swing songs to play, and "Old Time Rock and Roll" because we didn't want to endure watching all of the old people break out their best white man's overbite.
On the must play list:
Groove is in the Heart
White Wedding
You Dropped the Bomb on Me
Rock and Roll All Nite
question-old 97's or rhett miller version. both are beautiful and perfect for a wedding!
white wedding - i totally agree.
i love you til the end - the pogues
