this is the absolute truth. it stretches beyond school--to offices, neighborhoods, the blog world, EVERYWHERE. the sooner you realize this, the sooner you can realize it really doesn't matter and you can be comfortable being yourself anywhere you are. people everywhere are petty and insecure, and form social circles to make them feel safer and more important. i don't fit in, either, and i'm just beginning to learn that that is perfectly ok. you're going to be fine.
I absolutely second what sis b said. It's something I try to teach my students...that maybe the causes for the "drama" may be different, the drama is still there. There's always an ass kisser who gets completely undeserved recognition, there's always some clique that acts superior, there's always gossip...
I think the biggest difference is just how mature we become as individuals. When we're kids we're in the middle of it because that's all we know how to do. As adults, we can choose not to be a part of it and walk away. We teach people how to treat us, and if we allow them to do something once, we've just told them it's ok to keep doing it. So never, ever allow someone to treat you in a manner you find unacceptable or inappropriate. And so what if you don't fit in with a group of people who find it completely acceptable to make you feel that way? Do you really want to be part of a group that didn't respect you enough as a human being to make you feel welcome?

Bingo. Fitting in is WAY overrated.
And by the way, I love the new look!

Yep, it sucks. But you're one strong kitty.
i agree.
now pass that gin.
don't make me come get it.
you are all always welcome to my gin...
i guess i just thought that in a masters program people would grow the hell up and get over the petty shit...
You do know that gin and tonic with extra lime is my favorite drink? Right? Well now you do.
they were from target... but they were lacy...
we in the booze business (as well as aging baby boomers the world over; my mom included) refer to the gin and tonic concoction as 'panty remover'
hopefully they were la senza!
I'm sorry to hear that you are having a rough time.
Your new template looks nice. As does that tasty beverage.
sorry somethings up with immature people for you.
Hope everything else is going better !
Take care
That's vodka, and there's no E at the end of it.
I'm going to enjoy a glass of the Tanqueray No. 10 tonight. I should be in a very happy place very soon.
I'll live without the lime. I'm sour enough today.
